Staff helping sort clothing donations

Students in Mrs. Mays' science class are participating in a recycling challenge which will be going on for the whole school year (but they have extended the opportunity to everyone to divert their waste from landfills!!)

Thanks to donations from staff and students, we hit 1,245.5 lbs this week, our 6th week of recycling. We ended up with 620 lbs of clothing during our two week clothing drive. In the photo above, staff members are seen sorting these donations by size for students to access in the clothing closet.

Additionally, Dunbar Middle School was recently accepted into the Pepsico Recycle Rally program, which allows us to earn points on recycling type #1 and #2 plastics as well as drink cans. We can then use these points to get more recycling bins, branded stickers and pencils for the students,  and other items. Mrs. Mays is hoping to use our points to get some drink can recycling bins to add around the school for convenience.

Mrs. Mays is tracking our impact report from all materials we recycle (not just what we earn points for).

So far, Year to Date - all materials recycled at Dunbar weigh more than a manatee and we have saved an estimated 115 cubic yards of landfill space!

We’ve added recycling bins just inside the school entrance to help promote the program and to provide convenient drop-off. Two bins are marked. The empty barrel is where you can put your bags of mixed items in.

Let's go, Bulldogs!!
